Kolam and Raksha faces cut from kaduru wood

Ambalangoda on Sri Lanka's south coast is the traditional home of Kolam and Raksha mask carving — demon and folk-drama faces cut from soft kaduru wood, dried in shade for months before a chisel ever touches them, then painted in a dozen thin layers of natural pigment. A hand-carved Sri Lankan mask from Ceylona is a genuine collector's piece, not a tourist-shop souvenir; each one is carved and signed by a named artisan, and the eyes are always finished last.
