Hana fibre mats, palmyrah baskets, reed ware

In the Jaffna peninsula, palmyrah palm leaves are stripped, boiled and dried flat under stones before being woven into mats, baskets and reed ware — a craft that uses every part of a tree that also provides roofing, fencing and sugar. Ceylona's palmyrah and cane pieces come from small weaving cooperatives in the north, including women-led groups working across Chavakachcheri and Point Pedro.
